Today’s Gospel is the story of the young man asking what he has to do to gain eternal life. The story ends with him walking away sad at the challenge to “go, sell what you have and … follow me.”

Jesus begins His answer by telling the young man simply to keep the commandments, but goes on to say, “If you wish to be perfect.” Another time, Jesus commands us to be perfect (Matthew 5:48). In this exchange, I hear Jesus saying that it isn’t enough to simply not do evil. In order to gain eternal life we must “sell out” for heaven. Truly, we have all sold out for something. Just look at your calendar and bank account. I’ve heard it said that you can recognize the god you really worship by seeing how you spend your time and money.

Jesus calls us to reject the idols for whom we have sold out. Instead, give all of your treasure to the Lord. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you should empty your bank account and give Nativity a big ole’ check, but it does mean remembering that all you have is God’s and you’re just His steward. He entrusted you with many gifts and talents, and He’s calling you to follow Him.
