Job Description – Director of Music and Liturgy                                                                                   

Reports To: Pastor, Nativity Catholic Church                                             

FLSA: Exempt                                                                                                                                   

Job Status: Part-time

 

POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Music and Liturgy is a professional who holds specialized credentials in music and/or liturgy. The Director of Music and Liturgy has a thorough understanding of Catholic liturgy and is a leader who possesses the skills and talents to enhance worship through the varied expressions of liturgical music. This individual, with a vision of how a parish can achieve and maintain its potential, is responsible for identifying and communicating the liturgical music needs of the people of Nativity Parish. The Director of Music and Liturgy will focus on enabling and coordinating liturgical music for the worshiping assembly, vocal ensembles, cantors, instrumentalists, accompanists and others in music ministry.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  1. Coordination and Administration
  1. Serves as member of the Parish Staff and the Liturgy Committee. (If full time would be chair of the committee). Participation in decision-making regarding overall and liturgically specific parish direction and activities.
  2. Helps prepare and manage the Liturgy portion of the annual budget.
  3. Plans and conducts the rehearsals for the choirs/ensembles under his/her personal direction. (At present there is an adult choir and we would like to start a children’s choir.)
  4. Insures that the organ, piano, hand bells, and other related equipment are maintained, repaired and tuned as needed.
  5. Participates in appropriate Archdiocesan meetings, programs and activities.
  6. Personally accompanies/cantors a minimum of two to three liturgies per month; holy days and other liturgies.
  7. Other duties as assigned.
  1. Worship
  1. Works with presiders and liturgical ministers to discern parish worship and prayer needs and to assure quality liturgical celebrations and sacramental services.
  2. Provides input as needed for scheduling and formation of liturgical ministers, and is responsible for scheduling and training of music ministers for all liturgies.
  3. Serves as the usual accompanist/cantor for funeral liturgies.
  4. Serves as the usual accompanist/cantor for weddings. Assists couples to select appropriate music and other musicians.
  5. Provides for appropriate worship environment for the liturgical seasons.

 

  1. Education/Formation
  • Recruits and encourages the participation of parish members in the music ministry of the parish.
  • Maintains awareness of current trends in liturgy and music by reading church documents and professional journals, researching new music and by attending workshops and conferences.
  • Invites, encourages, and enhances assembly participation in the sung liturgy; assures ongoing expansion of the parish music repertoire.

 

Qualification Include

  1. Active member of a Catholic Faith community.
  2. Degree in Liturgy and or Music, or equivalent experience.
  3. Performance skills for piano, organ, and or voice. Hand bells a plus.
  4. Demonstrated skills as an effective choral conductor.
  5. Basic computer skills.
  6. Verbal skills to communicate and work closely with parish staff and others.

Working Environment

  1. Regular weekend and evening work hours required.
  2. In addition to the regular parish liturgical schedule, the Director of Liturgical Music may be required to provide music for additional services during Holy Week, sacramental celebrations, parish missions, and other services.
  3. Maintains office hours as needed to accomplish the work as described herewith.
